Travel Information

Practical information for international runners travelling to Cancún for race weekend.

Before you travel

Prepare your trip to Mexico.

Entry rules depend on your nationality, residence status and itinerary. Always check the latest official Mexican immigration information before travelling, particularly if your journey includes a connection in another country.

Important

Immigration and transit requirements can change. The information on this page is practical guidance for race participants and does not replace official government advice.

Mexico

Entry requirements

Travellers must carry a valid passport or accepted travel document. Whether a Mexican visa is required depends on nationality and immigration status.

Citizens of many countries, including EU countries, the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, Australia and Japan, can normally visit Mexico for tourism without obtaining a Mexican visa in advance.

Updated: for international arrivals by air, the old paper FMM tourist card is no longer normally presented or completed. Immigration information is generated by the authorities on entry. FMM procedures can still apply to some land entries.

Immigration officers may request supporting information such as a hotel booking, return or onward ticket and itinerary.

Connecting flights

Transit through the United States

If your journey to Cancún connects through a U.S. airport, U.S. entry or transit requirements apply even if you are only changing planes.

Travellers eligible for the Visa Waiver Program generally need an approved ESTA for transit unless they hold an appropriate U.S. visa or another qualifying status.

Updated: the old ESTA amount is obsolete. The current ESTA fee is US$40.27. Apply only through the official U.S. government ESTA service.

Allow generous connection time because immigration, baggage and security procedures can add time.

Leaving Mexico

Exit formalities

Keep your passport and travel documents available for departure. For air passengers, airline and airport charges are normally incorporated into the ticket rather than collected as a general cash departure tax at the terminal.

If immigration issued you a specific document or receipt on arrival, keep it safely for your stay.

Arrive at Cancún International Airport with enough time for airline check-in, baggage, security and immigration formalities.

Along with your race vest, shorts and running shoes, bring lightweight clothing for warm Caribbean conditions.

Tested running shoes

Check the bill before adding a gratuity, as some establishments may include a service charge.

Practical

Electricity

Mexico uses North American-style outlets, mainly plug types A and B. Travellers from Europe and many other regions will normally need a plug adapter.

Check the input-voltage range printed on chargers and devices before connecting them.

Quintana Roo

Cancún time zone

Cancún and the state of Quintana Roo use UTC−5 throughout the year.

Cancún is on UTC−5 year-round. Please note that the time difference with Europe may vary during the year due to European daylight-saving time changes.

When arranging flights, transfers or race-day alarms, use the local time shown by your phone after it connects to the Mexican mobile network.
